Athens
Greece · ATH
Athens is the capital of Greece and the historical birthplace of Western democracy, philosophy and theatre. The city of 664,000 (3.1 million in the metro region) sits in an Attic basin between Mount Lycabettus and the Saronic Gulf, with the Acropolis — a 156 m limestone outcrop — rising 80 m above the centre. Most travellers spend three to four days; the entire UNESCO core fits inside a 30-minute walk and pairs naturally with a day trip to Cape Sounion or the Saronic islands.

Why visit
You walk past 2,500-year-old foundations on the way to coffee. Greek food is cheap and excellent — €4 souvlakis, €2 freddo cappuccinos. 250+ sunny days, sea is 30 min by tram, and the city has been actively gentrifying since 2018: new neighbourhoods (Pangrati, Koukaki) match the food + bar scene of central Plaka without the tourist mark-up.
Neighbourhoods at a glance
- ·Plaka — historic quarter under the Acropolis, neoclassical houses, tourist tavernas.
- ·Monastiraki — flea-market square, souvlaki row, fast metro hub.
- ·Psyrri + Thiseio — bohemian bars, street art, rooftop dinners with Acropolis view.
- ·Koukaki — between the Acropolis Museum and Filopappou Hill; coolest food scene.
- ·Kolonaki — uphill chic; designer shops, Lycabettus funicular.
- ·Exarcheia + Pangrati — anarchist + intellectual heart; cheap mezedes + bookshops.
