Largest ancient castle complex on earth
Prague Castle holds the Guinness record for the largest ancient castle complex on earth — 70,000 m², longer than the Eiffel Tower laid on its side. It has been the seat of Bohemian kings since the 9th century, Holy Roman Emperors from 1346, and Czech presidents since 1918. The complex includes St Vitus Cathedral (1344–1929), the Old Royal Palace, Golden Lane (where Franz Kafka briefly lived in 1916–17), and the Lobkowicz Palace with its private art collection.
Tickets and the famous changing of the guard
Castle Circuit B ticket (250 CZK / ~€10) covers the cathedral, Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica and Golden Lane — the standard combo. Adding the Story of Prague Castle exhibit costs 350 CZK total. The changing of the guard at the main gate happens hourly 07:00–20:00; the noon ceremony is a longer parade with a brass fanfare from the windows above. Allow 3 hours for the full visit.
How to climb up — and avoid the steepest path
Three approaches: the famous Old Castle Steps from Malostranská metro (124 steps, 15 min, the iconic route); the gentler New Castle Steps via Nerudova street (slower climb, more shops); or tram 22 to Pražský hrad stop (drops you at the top, easiest). Coming down is the better direction for the staircase — knees thank you. Security check at the main gate; no large bags allowed.
